DO YOU NEED A SHAMAN FOR AYAHUASCA?

Traditionally, yes. Ayahuasca has been used for centuries within indigenous Amazonian cultures under the guidance of trained shamans (also called curanderos or ayahuasqueros) who manage the ceremony, dose, energy of the space, and individual participant experiences. From a safety perspective, having an experienced guide is strongly recommended. Ayahuasca produces intense psychological and physical effects, and someone trained in managing difficult experiences is important for participant safety. Good facilitators know how to hold space when someone is processing heavy emotions, and they watch for signs of medical distress. Taking ayahuasca alone or with inexperienced facilitators significantly increases risk. Even outside traditional shamanic contexts, reputable centers use trained facilitators with extensive ceremony experience and medical support staff.
