WHAT COUNTRY IS FAMOUS FOR AYAHUASCA?
Peru is the country most closely associated with ayahuasca worldwide. The brew originated with indigenous peoples of the Upper Amazon basin, and Peru remains the primary destination for traditional ayahuasca retreats. The city of Iquitos in the Peruvian Amazon has become a major hub for ayahuasca tourism, with dozens of retreat centers operating in the surrounding jungle. Brazil also has deep ayahuasca roots, particularly through organized religions like Santo Daime and União do Vegetal, which use the brew as a sacrament. Colombia and Ecuador have long indigenous traditions with the brew as well. In recent years, Costa Rica has emerged as a popular alternative, particularly for North Americans, due to its accessibility and growing number of retreat centers.
