WHO SHOULD AVOID AYAHUASCA?

People with a personal or family history of schizophrenia, psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder with psychotic features, or psychotic depression should avoid ayahuasca. Research consistently identifies these as significant risk factors for adverse psychiatric reactions. Anyone currently taking SSRIs, MAOIs, or other serotonergic medications must avoid ayahuasca due to the risk of serotonin syndrome, which can be life-threatening. People with serious heart conditions or uncontrolled high blood pressure face elevated cardiovascular risk. Those taking certain opioids, Parkinson's medications, or weight loss drugs should also avoid it due to dangerous drug interactions. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not participate. Anyone in an active state of mania or psychosis should not take ayahuasca under any circumstances.
